Reviews Of "On the Edge of Time"

Liner Notes

The Dreamtime, to Australian Aborigines, was a time in which ancestral beings appeared on earth to create all living things and aspects of the land. The Aborigines had a song for every tangible feature of the earth. For every living form, plant and animal alike, each tribe had a totem. These songs and totems were used as maps and historic references to pass along the ancestral ways of life from one generation to another. The rituals were in the form of laws which stated the relationships between features of the earth and all surrounding plants and creatures.

On The Edge of Time, (Ancient Futures) is a musical Dreamtime cycle that gives us a view into our own western ancestral pathways, providing us with provocative insights into our past and present day cultures. The listener is taken on an odyssey through the Arthurian Era, Renaissance and Age of Reason. The Arthurian Epic represents an ideal that we have never let go, the perfect beginning (& ending) for our own Dreamtime cycle. A Once and Future King creates a society that finds balance and harmony with the creation of law, justice, chivalry and a grail quest for spiritual enlightenment. This is the Eden from which we have fallen.

The latter two eras provided us with not only some of the greatest inventions and discoveries of our time but, sadly, also with the means of exploiting our natural resources and native peoples. The cycle then moves on to our time and, on an individual level, reveals the struggles of those who are at odds with their perceived obligation to fit into our technological, machine driven culture and the true yearnings of their soul. "Love Overdrive" and "White Heat" depict two contemporary anonymous young men who have nearly lost the grace of loving the divine female energy but are desperately trying to regain it, each in his own way. A stark warning as to where our world could be headed is expressed in "21st Century Love" as the song provides a futuristic glimpse into the inhumane direction in which present day "advancements" in science and technology could lead us all.

The music then makes a quantum shift, returning us to thoughts of the natural rhythms and cycles of life as celebrated by the ancient Celts. The songs remind us of the natural purity of a seascape in "Land’s End" and a peaceful discovery of the New World in "Brendan’s Voyage". "Imbolc" takes us back to ancient peoples and their celebrations of sacred festivals based on seasonal cycles.

In "Dream" we are presented with a solution. We have the power to choose our path and ultimate destination in this world. "Lay the troubles down" refers to a conscious spiritual decision to end tribal hatreds and conflicts, to lift ourselves to greater levels of awareness. "Reincarnation" then suggests that perhaps we will reunite with kindred, loving souls along the way. Lastly, in "10,000 Revolutions" we are reminded that in order to heal ourselves and the world around us we must find a balance between the endless whirling of the great machines of technology and the cycles of nature which we continue to interrupt. The music resonates with a sense of cosmic consciousness that teaches us that we can live in a new Dreamtime where all living things and nature are held sacred and once again in balance.

Brendan McCloud is an Ancient Futurist who believes that we can integrate a gentler technology with the cycles of nature and return to the ancient sacred celebrations that acknowledged our oneness with the Earth.
