This is a cautionary tale of a possible future wherein advanced technology, the desire for the immediate gratification of endless sensory stimulation, overcrowding and the devaluation of individual lives all come to a Malthusian crossroads. I can't possibly name all the science fiction writers who have created similar tales, but I will express deep appreciation to such influences as Aldous Huxley and "Brave New World", George Orwell and "1984", as well as a number of films such as "Soylent Green", "Logan's Run" and more recently "Strange Days". The most frightening aspect in these is the total subordination of the individual to the state, especially those wherein the individual is controlled by the gratification of physical desires and sensations. A brief preview of late night television & the Internet will show that all that is needed to fulfill this prophecy is the direct cerebral cortex download.

So you download in the morning, so you can upload in the evening

and you lay out all the right pills to complement the mood,

and you find yourself a partner who is tuned in to your wavelength,

who's not carrying any baggage that you don't need to bring along,

and you must prepare the latex before you stimulate the cortex

and you fasten down the seat belts and prepare yourselfves for the ride…
